Now in 1080p!!! Courtesy of Jan 'Brat' Stromback, today's hop will be from Kiruna to Narvik Framnes - both in his native Sweden! Special Note from Jan - "Fum to see you trying to fly the Kiruna-Narvik flight :) There are a few things I'd like to mention about this, one about the city of Kiruna, the city that is moving right now, yes, the whole city! The other is about the route, keep up at 7000 feet and you'll clear Sweden's highest peak, mount Kebnekajse, 2111 meters. A thing we learn in third grade elementary school, something that the Norwegian crew of a C-130J had totally forgotten some ten years ago when they during a joint exercise with NATO, (Norway is a member you know, I bet you do) Finland and Sweden. They was doing a simulated troop movement into Kiruna when their version of nav-equipment didn't have any data above a certain latitude (I'm glad there was no real war!) They smacked straight into the west glacier on that mountain, the whole crew of some six people perished, totally un-neccesary if they only would have remembered the third grade homework 😞 They where collecting pieces of the plane for five years as the weather isn't viable more than two months a year. A sad story. About Kiruna, yes the whole city or at least the main part and downtown center is moving because of the iron ore mine that it was built around in the last 110 years. The ground has become unstable and as the ore core stretches in underneath it it will collapse bit by bit. The mining is down at some 1500-1600 meters (4500-4800 feet) below the surface. The town hall is being demolished at the moment, a new one has been built and slowly almost everything is being moved or done with new buildings. If the mine wouldn't be there the town wouldn't be there either. Have a great flight! :)" Correction - I referred to Sweden as Norway THREE times. I'm sorry!
